Power Systems Engineer

Power systems engineer specialising in renewable generator compliance, grid integration and technical assessment of wind, solar and BESS projects across the Irish electricity system.

About Me

I am a Power Systems Engineer with experience in renewable generator compliance, grid integration and dynamic power system studies across the Irish electricity system. My work spans technical assessment of wind, solar and BESS projects, including VFRT, RoCoF, reactive power capability, harmonics, flicker and unbalanced fault studies. I have experience using DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSS®E and enjoy combining detailed technical analysis with practical engineering problem-solving and stakeholder collaboration.

Professional Experience

Experience spanning national grid compliance, renewable project development and building energy performance.

Graduate Engineer

EirGrid
Dec 2025 – Present
  • Lead technical assessment of VFRT compliance studies for wind and solar projects connecting to the Irish distribution network.
  • Review consultant submissions against Irish Distribution Code requirements, identifying modelling deficiencies, missing fault scenarios and non-compliant plant behaviour.
  • Assess RoCoF, reactive power capability, harmonics, voltage fluctuation and flicker, MSS, unbalanced fault and derogation studies.
  • Develop technical expertise in inverter-based resource performance including fault ride-through, reactive current injection, active power recovery, system strength impacts and power quality compliance.
  • Contributed to the development and revision of EirGrid's VFRT assessment methodology, guidance and template documentation used for renewable generation compliance assessments.
  • Initiated structured RoCoF assessment templates and review methodologies and supported expansion of compliance review processes into reactive capability and frequency studies.
  • Coordinate technical engagement with ESB Networks, renewable developers, consultants, commissioning teams and senior engineers to resolve compliance issues and progress generator connections.
  • Apply DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSS®E to dynamic RMS simulation review, renewable generator modelling and power system study assessment.

Renewable Energy Development Engineer

Power Capital Renewable Energy
Jan 2024 – Aug 2024
  • Performed CAPEX and OPEX modelling for utility-scale solar PV projects, including BESS and synchronous condenser integration.
  • Supported grid and planning activities, prepared single-line diagrams and coordinated technical inputs with contractors and suppliers.
  • Used PVCase, PVSyst and QGIS for renewable project analysis, layout development and design assessment.

Sustainability Team Member

METEC Consulting Engineers, Bray
Summers 2022 & 2023
  • Delivered building energy modelling and sustainability assessments using IES VE in support of NZEB and BER compliance.
  • Supported site visits and Part L energy performance assessments within a multidisciplinary consulting environment.

Master's Thesis

Design and Development of an Electromagnetic Gravity Energy Storage System

  • Designed and developed a novel electromagnetic gravity energy storage system integrating mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic engineering principles.
  • Used ANSYS Maxwell to model and optimise electromagnetic field performance, supported by system sizing, material selection and mechanical/electrical design calculations.
  • Constructed a bench-scale prototype to validate the design through experimental testing and compare measured performance with theoretical and simulated results.
  • Evaluated the system's efficiency, feasibility and potential scalability for future energy storage applications.
